Take it from someone who has been in the digital entrepreneur world for 3 years now: building a business is not as easy as “all you need is a laptop!” Granted, in today’s day and age, it’s much easier than it would’ve been a few years ago. SO much has happened in the past 5 years that has catapulted us into this new digital era, where everyone works online and anyone can travel and still receive a paycheck.


In this crazy time of people yelling at you from the four corners of the world about what you should and shouldn’t be doing with your first online business, I wanted to give you my top 5 tips for newbie digital entrepreneurs. It’s time to cut through the noise and get REAL, y’all.


  1. Don’t get so caught up in automation.

You can run your business without the latest automation tool, like Buffer or CoSchedule or Planoly or whatever. Here’s my take on automation: it’s good for those who have already cultivated a larger audience and who are simply too busy to handle daily posting. Otherwise, everyone with smaller audiences (like, under 10,000 on Instagram for example) should probably be manually posting. It’s better for the “algorithms” (ie., Instagram and Facebook will more likely show your posts) and it’s better for you to be able to truly connect with people. As a plus, you can share whatever is on your mind that day and it really helps with staying authentic.


One way automation has really wreaked havoc in our society is that on days like last week, when there was a shooting on the East Coast, I counted several different “influencers” who were still posting about their business or about their latest product offering. As much as I support all my biz friends, you can tell when something is automated and you’re not present in your brand. I don’t ever want to get so caught up in automation that I miss the important things that need to be discussed, or realize when I should just have a day of silence to honor those wounded.


I hope that made sense, because I kind of rambled for a second!


  1. It’s okay to just be on one or two social platforms.

I see so many entrepreneurs these days trying to keep up with Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and LinkedIn – all at the same time. In order to do that, most of them are cross-posting the same content and honestly, that trend is a little tired in 2018. If you’re going to have social media, only hang out on the platforms that GIVE you energy. If you LOVE it, great! Stay there. For me, it’s Facebook and Instagram. In fact, I’m on Pinterest a ton and even though I started it as a business thing, it’s now turned into just something I do on my downtime, like at night when I’m winding down. Because it stressed me out SO MUCH to be constantly scheduling out my Tailwind, I said forget about it and started doing it for FUN!


That’s how your platforms should make you feel. If there’s a ton of pressure to post at certain times, or you feel like you can’t handle it all so your only option is to quit or to automate everything, you’re doing TOO MUCH, babe. Stick to 1-2 social platforms that keep you happy and toss out the opinions of anyone who says you should be everywhere. Blah. They don’t determine your success.


  1. Volunteer/serve.

This is so important. I cannot stress it enough. One thing that happens over and over when we start working from home or working a TON on our own businesses is that we become super, duper focused. On us. On our lives. On our success.


Getting outside and volunteering and serving can really open our eyes to what’s going on around us. It’s not limited to how many hearts your latest Instagram post racked up, you know?


I do this by helping my local community center set up for events, serve coffee, and share my essential oils with people who really need them. These are just a couple ways, but there are TONS of options out there. You can volunteer at a homeless shelter, you can serve soup, you can donate your clothes, you can go on a food drive, you can work at an animal shelter, and so much more. Just get curious and get outside yourself.


  1. Collaborate like a crazy person.

As we step into our first online business, it can be SUPER overwhelming. The first big thing I did RIGHT was friending a few people who had been in the online space for a while. They took me under their wing, did joint webinars and all sorts of fun collaborations with me, and taught me a whole lot. I’m a quick learner, but sometimes it’s rough to know what we even SHOULD be learning when we’re beginners.


I also collaborated with lots of girls who were ALSO just starting out. That was so fun because we got to learn a lot of things side by side. Peer learning is a joy and I really support anyone who wants to learn alongside someone else. The easiest way to get hooked into this would be joining Facebook groups and putting out a call for someone in your field who is brand new.


  1. Get your mindset right.

I labeled this as #1 for a reason: it’s the single most important thing you can do as an entrepreneur. Daily mindset work is a MUST for everyone just getting started, and possibly even more so for those who have been in the field for a long time. There are lots of ways you can do this. I recommend a routine, and I’d be happy to share mine with you. I put it in bullet points because honestly, the amount of time I spend on each thing every day varies drastically, depending on what my body is telling me.

  • Journaling (positivity, gratitude – but also, anything dramatic or irritating I need to get off my chest)
  • Top 3 goals for the day (these go in my journal too)
  • Top 3 goals for the week (good guess – these also go in my journal)
  • Affirmations (“I trust myself.” “I will always know the right path to take.”)
  • Visualizations (Describe your “higher self” and what she would be doing today)
  • Exercise (I’m doing the Couch 2 5k app – it’s so fun and I love running!)
  • Reading (Currently reading “Go Pro”)

This is a LOT, I know. But if you organize your time, which you can easily do with something like the 30/30 app, you can have a timer go off when it’s time to move to the next thing.
